9 Questions to Ask When Hiring Your Flooring Installer

So you have decided to remodel your home and replace your old flooring – what’s next? Now it is time to hire a qualified professional to install your new hardwoods! Read below for some questions to ask to get your conversation started with a potential installation professional.

1. Is your installer licensed and insured to do this kind of work?

Knowing this information will tell you if your installer is trustworthy and has taken the necessary steps to conduct their business legally. It also means that you can rest assured, knowing if something goes wrong, they are covered. Unexpected events happen, sometimes not even related to the floor itself. There are always what if’s: what if someone accidentally cuts into electrical wiring? What if someone accidentally bursts a pipe and floods the basement? Accidents like these are rare, but they happen; when they do, you’ll be really happy your contractor is covered.

2. Is your installer NWFA certified?

NWFA stands for the National Wood Flooring Association. Professionals who are NWFA Certified are recognized in the industry are universally recognized as the absolute best in the business. Installers who have been certified with the NWFA are committed to mastering the installation process and will continue to participate in ongoing education (both online and hands-on) to maintain and advance their skill set.

View a complete list of NWFA certified installers here.

3. Will the installer ensure to measure and record the moisture content of the materials and relative humidity of the environment?

The NWFA guidelines include instructions for proper measurement of the moisture content of the hardwood flooring as well as the relative humidity of the environment. Most manufacturers require this information if there are any problems with the flooring. Lack of records in this area may void your warranty.

4. What kind of warranty does the installer offer for their work?

Hardwood flooring is a big investment so make sure you choose an installer who will back up their own work.

5. Does your installer have references and positive online reviews?

Ask for references and call them! Do some research and search for your installer online on sites such as Yelp, Angie’s List, and Google reviews. Keep in mind that most installers will have a few complaints. While this is normal and not a reason to discount an installer, it’s important to see if those complaints were valid and if they were addressed by the installer. Look at the reviews as a whole – if the installer has 20+ positive reviews and only a few negative ones, that is normal record. However, if the installer has 7 reviews and 4 of which are negative, this is cause for concern and you might want to look at other installers.

6. How will they contain dust and handle clean-up?

Prepping a room for new flooring and the actual installation can create quite a mess. There are many ways to contain it and its best to ask your installer up front. How will they protect window furnishings, lighting fixtures, and large appliances? Will they take away and dispose of pull away materials (i.e. your old floor)? While it might seem like common sense that an installer would clean up after installation, it’s not always the case. Make sure they know that clean-up is expected.

7. How long will the job take?

This is extremely important information to know. Not only will it allow you to have a reasonable expectation for the timeline of the project, you can also make any necessary plans on your end. Ask for information on how the project will progress including lead times for product (when it will be delivered, the length of the acclimation process) and if they will skip any days throughout the project duration (some days may be taken off as the product dries, if the crew doesn’t work on certain days of the week, etc.).

8. Will they take the time for proper acclimation?

Acclimation is an important step when it comes to installing hardwood flooring. Improper acclimation will exaggerate seasonal gapping and may result in buckling and permanent damage to your new floor. Installers often do their best to accomplish their clients’ design plans in their desired timeline but make sure that this important step in the installation process will not be skipped over. Refer to the hardwood flooring manufacturer’s instructions for information on acclimation times and processes.

Click here for detailed Urbanfloor installation guides.

9. How will they handle payment?

As a general rule, it is a red flag when a flooring installer requests payment before any work has been completed. There are exceptions to this, of course (for example, if the installer needs to pick up materials such as glue or moldings for the job). Generally, flooring installers require a deposit on the first day of work and the rest upon project completion.

We hope these questions help you to make a more informed decision about who will install your beautiful new floors. Superior hardwood and quality installation make for a stunning floor!

Introducing the L’artiste Collection

L’artiste is inspired by some of history’s most prestigious French artists. With genuine European oak featuring elegant brushed detail, each handcrafted ultra-wide and extra-long plank is a work of art in its own right.

Featuring 10 different colors with 8 5/8” plank widths, the L’artiste is the perfect canvas for your interior design dreams.

Take a look at a few of the beautiful colors in this stunning selection of European oak.

Delacroix

Widely recognized as the leader of the French Romantic school of painting, Eugene Delacroix produced over 9,000 works of art in his lifetime. His influential work both shaped the work of Impressionists and gave inspiration to the Symbolist movement. Delacroix’s utilization of expressive brushstrokes and his careful study of color astounds even today. His works center around bold themes, many of which were inspired by the works of Shakespeare, Goethe, and Byron.

The European oak Delacroix, inspired by this great artist, is likewise as bold and daring as the painter himself. Deep cocoa-brown 8 5/8” wide wire-brushed planks of genuine European oak are an apposite way to pay tribute to such a significant artist.

Renoir

A well-known and celebrated artist of the Impressionist movement, Pierre-Auguste Renoir reveled in the beauty he painted. A lover of all things beautiful, his work is full of sparkling color and the brilliant playing of light. A man of great passion, Renoir’s paintings are characterized by a richness of emotion and a sincerely warm response to the world around him and all the people who call it home.

The wire-brushed European oak Renoir mirrors this intrinsic warmth and love of beauty. With a balanced and neutral color, this 8 5/8” wide plank floor will infuse into your home the same life and richness of feeling of Renoir’s most beloved works of art.

Morisot

Berthe Morisot, a French Impressionist painter, focused her painting on a variety of different subjects. From pristine landscapes to portraits and domestic scenes. Her paintings were the work of careful, diligent study. Each delicate brushstroke in its precise and purposeful place. From her watercolors, charcoal drawings, oil paintings, and more, each stroke of her brush or dash of her pencil was a focused act of inspiration.

Her diligence and stunning technique is exhibited it the luminous quality of the European oak Morisot floor. Beautiful wood grain patterns are coupled with a reactive stain, lightly bringing out the natural splendor of genuine European oak. The charming knots and mineral streaks on each 8 5/8” wide plank are creations of nature as lovely and as purposeful as Morisot’s many works of art.

Rousseau

Posthumously celebrated as a self-taught genius, Henri Rousseau was a master of his craft. His paintings explore vivid color and the wildness of nature. Dense jungle scenes and wild animals of the rainforest were a few of his favorite subjects though he never actually left France. Inspired by what he saw illustrated in books, Rousseau dared to imagine the beauty worlds away from him and brought it to life before his eyes on canvas.

This same daring exposition is featured in our floor by the same name. The European oak Rousseau captures this prolific painter’s imagination and boldness in his art. Each 8 5/8” wire-brushed plank is accented with saw marks, giving this unique and dark floor a reclaimed aesthetic.

Hardwood flooring is a true investment in many applications of the word. It is an investment, of course, in your home as it can increase its value and resale potential. Not only that, hardwood floors are also an investment in your family and in your style. It is important to select the right option for your family and style taste.

Color aside, how do you go about choosing whether to opt for a solid hardwood floor or an engineered hardwood floor? We’re here to lay out the options and give you all the info!

First, let’s define the terms we’re working with.

Solid Hardwood Floor

As the name of this classification might suggest, solid hardwood floor is just that – solid. Made from a single piece of natural wood, solid hardwood floors are synonymous with longevity and reliability.

Urbanfloor’s Presidential Signature collection, for instance, is a collection of 100% solid hardwood floor. Urbanfloor solid hardwoods are durable and of the highest possible quality, ensuring your floor will last for generations to come.

Engineered Hardwood Floor

Engineered hardwood floor, like solid, is made of 100% natural wood. Unlike solid, however, it is constructed in multiple, cross-grain layers. The toplayer, or wear layer, comes in a variety of species and colors. Each layer of the core is laid cross-grain, in different directions, and ensures that the structure is highly stable and much less likely to expand and contract when it encounters moisture, humidity, and fluctuating temperatures.

Installation

When it comes to installation, engineered hardwood floors are more versatile. Given the correct environmental conditions, engineered hardwood floors can be installed below, on, or above grade using many different installation techniques (including glue, float, nail/staple) and over all types of subfloor including wood and concrete. Solid wood floors can be installed on or above grade using the nail/staple method onto the wood subfloor only.

Design Options & Aesthetic

When it comes to both solid and engineered hardwood, there are a variety of colors, textures, and species to choose from – from hand-scraped maple to wire-brushed European oak.

When it comes to width, solid hardwood typically comes at a maximum width of 5”. Ultra-wide and extra-long planks are extremely popular when it comes to modern design trends. This aesthetic, however, is only available with engineered wood floors. This is largely due to the overall stability that the construction of the engineered hardwood plank brings to the floor and is able to be more resilient to environmental factors.

Cost & Resale Value

Depending on the type of engineered floor, engineered floor costs relatively the same as solid. Additionally, as both floor types are constructed from 100% natural wood, each add value and style to your home.

If you are interested in utilizing a radiant heat system in your home, engineered hardwood may be the way to go. On account of its inherent resiliency to fluctuating temperatures, engineered hardwood is compatible with hydronic radiant heat systems.

Longevity

When it comes to the longevity of engineered hardwood and solid hardwood, their lifespan is relatively similar. A quality floor, when properly maintained and cared for, can last upwards of 100 years.

Solid floors can generally be refinished multiple times. This refinishing process involves sanding down the finish of the floor, removing the top stain, and putting a fresh stain and finish on top. With this method, you can change the overall look of the floor. Keep in mind, however, that if your original floor had texture (wire-brushing, hand-scraping, etc.) this will be removed with the refinishing process.

While some engineered floors can also be completely refinished, it is not a guarantee with this kind of construction as it all depends on the thickness of the wear layer on top. Make sure to select a product with a thicker wear layer if you plan on sanding and refinishing in the future.

For those who do not want to go through the extensive refinishing process, a screen and re-coat is always an option for refreshing your floors. This process is much less intensive and does not require sanding of the wood. Instead, a screen and re-coat involves buffing the original finish and reapplying a new top coat to restore your floors to their original glory. This option is available for both solid and engineered hardwood floors and can be done multiple times.
